Does God Exist?: A Debate
Glenn Stanton and John Corvino
Does God exist? And what difference should that make to our lives? In this program, philosopher John Corvino and Christian apologist Glenn Stanton tackle these and related issues. Corvino is a religious skeptic and noted gay-rights advocate; Stanton is a researcher for Focus on the Family, one of the nation's premier Christian organizations. For the last five years the two have debated each other dozens of times at campuses across the country on the issue of marriage; in the process, they have formed a unique friendship, which has lead to deeper conversations about life's purpose and the nature of reality. In this respectful yet spirited exchange, they address questions such as "What counts as adequate proof?" "Can the world make sense without a Designer?" "What does the existence of evil tell us?" and "Can life be meaningful if there is no afterlife?" among others. In the process, they model the rigorous yet civil dialogue for which they are widely sought. This debate moves beyond the stock arguments to deep personal questions about what ultimately matters.
John Corvino, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where he specializes in ethics. He is the editor of Same Sex: Debating the Ethics, Science and Culture of Homosexuality, and the author of over 100 articles and opinion pieces, which have appeared in regional and national print media, at the online Independent Gay Forum (www.indegayforum.org), and in numerous academic journals and anthologies. For over a decade he has entertained and educated diverse audiences, including professional organizations, the Lawrence Livermore National Research Laboratory, the National Institutes of Health, and dozens of colleges and universities. John has been a guest on MSNBCs Scarborough Country and on numerous radio programs.
Glenn T. Stanton is the Senior Analyst for Marriage and Sexuality and the Director of Social Research and Cultural Affairs at Focus on the Family. Glenn has authored or contributed to nine books on the intersections of family and cutting social issues, including Why Marriage Matters: Reasons to Believe in Marriage in Postmodern Society and Marriage on Trial: The Case Against Same-Sex Marriage and Parenting. Glenn had been featured on both C-SPAN BookTV and a PBS documentary. He also served as a consultant to the Bush Administration on increasing father involvement in the Head Start program.
