About

Stevie Tran is an attorney, published author, and speaker whose scholarship focuses on the intersection of diversity litigation and social issues in the transgender community. Stevie received her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Hofstra University School of Law, where she was a member of the LGBT Rights Fellowship—the only program in the nation that trains attorneys on LGBT legal and policy matters as a centerpiece of their legal education. She has experience working for a federal judge, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She was also one of the first interns of the Equality Federation Institute’s Summer Internship, where she worked with Equality Arizona to develop the Scottsdale Transgender Equality Project—focused on educating local businesses about the benefits of developing LGBT-inclusive policies.

Stevie’s experience will provide a critical yet welcoming perspective to conversations of inclusion and diversity. She is committed to the issues surrounding access to student organizations and the fraternal community. As an alumna member, she remains actively involved with her national fraternity—an organization founded to develop character and leadership in queer and allied men. In fact, Stevie helped to develop her fraternity’s policy on gender: the most inclusive transgender membership policy for any fraternal organization. Her experience ideally situates her to help you, your organization, and your campus find a way for all interested students to have a fulfilling college experience and to access the benefits and activities on campus.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, from Arizona State University in Political Science, with Minors in Japanese and Women and Gender Studies and an LGBT Studies Certificate. Her work and writing can be found in:

It’s More Than Just Sports: An Introduction to Title IX and How It Affects You
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”) protects people from discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance. How does this language, though, translate to the everyday campus setting? This program serves as an introduction to Title IX, explores how it works, and identifies the individuals who have responsibilities under the law. It will set forth the most common incidents — as well as growing trends involving diverse populations like transgender students — covered under Title IX and the various avenues to report a potential Title IX violation. Further, this program will help you understand the general reporting process, as well as the consequences of failing to abide by Title IX. This program can be customized to focus on specific issues on your campus if necessary.
“I’m Not a Boy Anymore”: Understanding the Transgender Identity
After winter break, Michael returned to campus, asking to be called “Michelle.” He said that “he” was now “she” and refused to respond when others used his legal name. What do you do now? First, take a deep breath. This program is designed to safely acclimate you to the “transgender issue” and will serve as an educational, non-threatening introduction to the transgender identity. It will help you navigate the endless world of terms — what’s the difference between “transgender” and “transsexual,” for instance? Importantly, this conversation will orientate you to a growing conversation on campuses across the country through the perspective and personal experiences of a young transgender woman of color. This program can be tailored to include more in-depth, potential legal implications and trends within the educational setting, depending on where your campus is in the conversation.

With her legal training, professional, and personal experiences, she can provide a risk analysis, drafting, education, and the implementation of inclusive policies for transgender students — especially important in light of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. I thought that the performance went phenomenally and that Stevie was an amazing person to bring to our campus. She was a very charismatic speaker and was really engaging with our audience. Eastern doesn't always have the most responsive audience members when it comes to question and answer sessions so I was very happy that she was able to engage the audience in a way that made them feel comfortable and open enough to ask deep and insightful questions.
