About

Nicole Snell is an award-winning international trainer, TEDx Speaker, survivor advocate, and personal safety expert specializing in sexual assault & violence prevention education, boundaries, and women’s empowerment. She is the CEO of Empowered Journeys, Inc. and Girls Fight Back, an NACP Credentialed Victim Advocate, and the founder of Outdoor Defense. Nicole graduated Summa Cum Laude from Cal State Long Beach with a BA in Speech Communication and has trained millions of people worldwide in academia, Fortune 500 companies, healthcare providers, tribal nations, retreats and more. She has provided Sexual Assault Prevention & Response (SAPR/SHARP) trainings for every branch of the US Armed Forces at hundreds of installations around the globe —including the Pentagon—and has delivered over 500 speaking engagements globally.
 
Nicole's programs are evidence-based, trauma-informed, interactive, and inclusive. Peer-reviewed articles on Girls Fight Back's efficacy were published in the Sexual Assault Report and in Family & Intimate Partner Violence Quarterly 2024.  Nicole has received several honors and awards for her work including the NASPA Peer Initiatives Award 2023 for her Students Fight Back program, a 2024 Certificate of Appreciation from Colonel Peter Glass, US Army Deputy Director of the Futures and Concepts Center at Fort Eustis, and she was recently named a Camp HOPE America Hope Hero. Her 2025 TEDx Talk, What Would You Do If You Felt Safe?, was selected by TEDx as an Editor’s pick.  
 
Nicole has been featured for her violence prevention and outdoor safety expertise in global media including KTLA5, Women’s Health Magazine, Runner’s World, and Dateline NBC. She has appeared as a guest on over 50 podcasts including: Crime Off The Grid, Nike Trained, and the Fox True Crime Podcast. Nicole is committed to ending violence in all of its forms and passionately believes that everyone has the right to walk through the world feeling safe, powerful, confident, and limitless.

Boundaries for Personal Empowerment
​​This interactive program is designed for any group that wants to feel confident about setting boundaries in professional and personal settings.  We discuss the importance of speaking up for your needs, trusting your intuition, and using clear, assertive communication. It will provide tools to help you recognize manipulative behavior as well as feel better equipped to be an active bystander. Our goal is to enable you to confidently enforce your boundaries in direct and respectful ways.

This program is 60-90 minutes plus Q&A and can be customized to fit a variety of needs.
Girls Fight Back
Girls Fight Back is the world renowned personal safety and empowerment self-defense program for women and girls worldwide!

Born in direct response to the June 2001 murder of a dynamic, athletic, and loved college student named Shannon McNamara, her friend and sorority sister, Erin Weed founded Girls Fight Back to provide practical and empowering options for young women to learn violence prevention and self-defense in a safe environment. 


Nicole took over the company in 2020 and her mission is to continue making preventing violence and fighting back an approachable topic for every woman and girl. We are our own best protectors!
Yes, I’m Hiking Solo
Ever been worried about your safety when hiking or traveling solo? Do you want to feel confident and independent venturing out on your own? Have you been wanting to learn some badass self-defense moves for your next adventure or trip? Join Nicole as she shares simple self-defense strategies to empower you to feel more confident about exploring the outdoors or wherever your adventure takes you—whether solo or in a group. Nicole is an avid solo traveler and adventurer having visited 47 states, hiked in 15 countries and traveled to 25 countries on 6 continents.

Students Fight Back is the gender inclusive and Title IX compliant version of Girls Fight Back.  Nicole believes that people of all genders can benefit from learning personal safety and self-defense skills. And when we all come together to be active bystanders, we can create safer communities.

The program is 75 minutes + Q&A.
S.A.V.E.
S.A.V.E. is a fully customizable, interactive presentation designed to educate corporate groups on essential safety concepts. The content is flexible to any institutional needs or goals, and is coordinated with your HR department in advance of the session to ensure that the messaging and terminology aligns with your company’s current policies and objectives. Whether you’re dealing with co-workers, customers, friends, acquaintances, or strangers, you’ll learn verbal and physical strategies to manage your safety and comfort in ways that work for you. S.A.V.E. specifically addresses the social anxiety that is common when setting personal boundaries in uncomfortable conversations or situations, and there is ample opportunity for attendees to practice working through the initial discomfort—contributing to a safer workspace for all.

bystander intervention
Bystander Intervention & Safety Strategies for Addressing Harassment is an interactive program that focuses on the non-physical aspects of self-defense by combining core material from both Girls Fight Back and IMPACT Personal Safety.  This session will empower individuals with personal safety options including strategies for bystander intervention and boundary setting.

We'll address the importance of intuition and awareness when managing our safety and will discuss how to use verbal skills when faced with confrontations, identity based harassment and/or street harassment.

The goal of the session is to offer participants tools that can help them feel comfortable in their ability to respond to various situations they may encounter and be a strong ally for others regardless of how they identify.
