Bill Conway is a Los Angeles-based writer and publisher. After perfecting the art of working in a warehouse for over a decade, he co-founded the popular punk satire website The Hard Times and has acted as its Editor-in-Chief for nearly a decade more. Through his work with the site, he’s gained access to multiple VIP areas at festivals and concerts, which allowed him to steal bottled water from the green rooms of most of your favorite bands. So that’s rad.

In this info-packed yet irreverent presentation, Bill uses his publishing experience and examples from his career to inspire students to develop their ideas for a grassroots publication—from the very beginning stages to a finished product that can be continually replicated. He covers the importance of consistency, fending off burnout, and silly-yet-effective idea generating techniques. Once drafted, it’s time to launch: learn how to leverage social media platforms to build an audience from scratch.

Growing up in the suburbs of Massachusetts, Bill was attracted to the counter-culture world of skateboarding and punk music. His passion, a few hundred dollars, and a dream led to one of the most recognizable properties in satire—over 1,000,000 followers across various social media platforms and a book published in 2019. If you’re passionate about a story, an idea, a piece of art, a mission: one method for sharing it has succeeded since the invention of the printing press, and Bill’s just the guy to introduce it.
