Typically, after a tragic event the focus of recovery efforts begins with the injured or deceased. Lisa, through her experiences from the Virginia Tech incident, brought forward the impact these tragic events have on the non-injured survivors. As a community leader, her presentation helped me understand the importance of assistance for all survivors of tragic incidents.

Michele and Lisa were the highlights of the day. The message that they delivered fit perfectly with the audience expectations. Their presentations couldn’t have been better. They were absolutely fantastic. Administrators are taking suggestions back to their school divisions. I can’t thank you enough for taking care of everything on your end.

A rush of emotions came over me as I heard Lisa give her presentation. Lisa opened my eyes to seek help. Her horrifying experience helped shape her strength and through her strength I found mine as I sought out my recovery. I learned to not belittle my position as a survivor simply because I was not in the direct line of fire; I was there, I went through my own experience and I was empowered to overcome the emotional distress afterwards through her inspirational presentation.

Lisa Hamp is one of the most courageous people I have ever met. Her story is one that we all should hear. It is a story of strength, intellect, perseverance and ultimately, grace. Lisa reminds us that we are all scared by the senseless violence affecting our society. She also shows us that with faith, all things are possible.

Lisa was well-prepared and well-received by the attendees. She gave us a personal and insightful look into her life after an extremely terrible event. Lisa’s life-changing experiences—not only in the days immediately following the shooting, but in the years to follow—drove home very important indicators on physical and mental wellness. As I watched, the audience all seemed intently focused on Lisa. We thank Lisa for educating us should we have an incident in our community.

Campus Safety Magazine had the pleasure of hosting Lisa as one of our keynote speakers at Campus Safety Conference East this summer. Her presentation focused on the often-overlooked reality that a person does not need to be physically injured to be traumatized and physically affected by a tragedy. In Lisa's case, the tragedy was the 2007 Virginia Tech mass shooting, which resulted in the deaths of 32 students and faculty members. As the shooter attempted to enter her classroom, Lisa and her classmates barricaded the door, preventing the shooter from gaining access. Although Lisa was fortunate in that she was not shot during the ordeal, she heard and felt what was going on just outside of her classroom. As a result, she developed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and an eating disorder, which remained unrecognized and untreated for many years following the tragedy. During her keynote at our conference, Lisa talked about her experience during the attack, as well as her journey to recovery. So powerful was her presentation that it brought me to tears knowing that I, as well as our society as a whole, have ignored the needs of our "walking wounded" for too long. In her presentation, Lisa effectively and powerfully covers a topic that must get more attention. She also offers lessons that will help others address this issue appropriately. I applaud her in her efforts to shine a spotlight on this issue.
