Saint Joseph’s University cannot give enough praise for Punch Line Drunk.  Patrick does a great job balancing humor and personal narrative.  His college experience sounds a lot like many students, high achieving in the classroom and co-curricular activities, but also engaging in high risk substance use.  This made the space provided throughout the show for the audience to reflect on their own relationship with substance use all the more impactful.  Punch Line Drunk  was an effective, entertaining and unique addition to our prevention education curriculum.  Attendees reported a high level of satisfaction and learning after the event.  We will continue to explore opportunities to integrate Punch Line Drunk in future prevention efforts.

[We are] extremely satisfied!  It was a great show and led to great conversation with students. I loved how relatable and hilarious Patrick‘s story is and how he was able to delve deeply into a very difficult topic while keeping the show light and positive. I have already recommended this talk to other colleges in Virginia. I think there could have been more time for discussion, just because Patrick was very engaging, but felt good overall.

I thought he did a great job, particularly being professional, patient, and flexible. I liked how his story incorporated clinical components as well as reflections on how his actions impacted the people around him, which made the presentation relatable. I especially appreciated his honesty when discussing such a personal and challenging experience.

Though a small part, I loved how he threaded the slides with the picture of awkward him in a crowd throughout the presentation, and then ended with the professional, confident, performer him in front of the crowd. It gave the whole presentation a great arc and made you reflect on how sometimes what inhibits you isn't a lack of ability, but instead the negative choices or unhealthy behaviors you're engaging in, and that by taking control and seeking help you can overcome this and be confident at what you do.

We thought it was a genuine and funny way of tackling the tough subjects of addiction and recovery. We liked his ability to connect with our audience, and
the PowerPoint presentation fit well with the his script. We also appreciated
his discussion on how people tried to reach out to him to provide help and
whether/how their attempts were helpful. There was nothing discussed or  included that felt distracting or inappropriate. We were happy with all aspects of the show. We believe that this was a fantastic medium to discuss addiction and how it can start in the college setting, as well as sobriety and what that journey truly looks like. Our audience opened up and enjoyed it very much! Thank you all for working with us to host Patrick at our campus.

Extremely satisfied with Patrick’s talk! Constant engagement with students. It was a perfect combination of funny  stories, jokes, and real life truths to truly hit home with what students struggle with themselves.

It was a pleasure having Patrick on campus last week. He was so amazing to work with. The presentation is respectfully done with the right amount of humor and serious reflection. His mix of humor and truth really made those who attended think.

Patrick is quite engaging as a presenter. He related to the students in a way that kept them interested and involved. The message is clear, but it is sprinkled with humor as well as reality. You can sense his concern for the audience to make wise choices. Students stayed after the presentation to talk and ask questions, so I consider that a successful venture.
As an artist, Patrick is extremely easy to work with. His rider requests are simple and easy to fulfill. Very friendly and willing to consider any questions or concerns from the host school to help make it a better show. I was pleased with the event.

I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of psycho-education on SUD, which he incorporated into his talk. I also appreciated how he wove storytelling in with comedy.
I LOVED how much he supported and plugged our University’s Recovery Center!

His presentation was a great balance of humor as well as recognizing the seriousness of his experiences. When we were initially presented with Patrick as an option, I was hesitant to bring humor to this topic, but Patrick did it extremely well. I personally enjoyed his "pop quiz" which used the criteria for an SUD. I watched the reaction of the students that were present and many were unaware of the actual criteria so I feel like there were some Ah-Ha moments. I absolutely would [recommend him], and I would be interested in bringing him back as well.

Patrick was a big hit; I heard nothing but positive things from students, and I personally thought he was terrific. … The consensus was that the way he told his life story and journey with recovery was touching, absorbing, and very affecting. His use of humor and empathy worked extremely well in connecting to the audience and getting us involved in his story. I especially liked it that he was so very genuine and disclosed so much about himself in a way that interested us and made us root for him. He seemed real about his life struggles in a way that really connected. The students appreciated that he joined them for the year-end dinner before the act, and seemed really engaged. I liked his use of audiovisuals to help with the arc of his story; very effective.

Overall, I think it was the most effective event on this topic that we’ve had in the 18 years I've worked here. We would definitely, emphatically want him back. The small crowd that was there was enthusiastic … and there's been a nice afterglow in the Washingtonian group.

Thanks so much for your help with this after all this time. Please extend my warmest regards and admiration to Patrick.

Patrick's performance did very well. I was extremely satisfied with his talk as it was a very fun way to educate our students on alcohol. Our Greek Organizations all have a mandatory education/training regarding alcohol and Patrick's performance gave them an opportunity to enjoy themselves while still receiving their required education/training. The part I liked most about his performance was how approachable Patrick was during the show. There was not anything that Patrick covered that I felt was distracting or inappropriate. I would say that I am very likely to recommend Patrick to other colleges and/or agencies for his Punchline Drunk Performance.

The program was amazing and a big hit! I was very pleased with everything Patrick brought to the table. I have personally attended many Alcohol Awareness programs, but Patrick’s balance of humor, pop culture references, lived experiences, the DSM V (smile), and his genuineness regarding student welfare, all combined to make this the best program of this kind I have experienced.

Attendees comments:

- Patrick really understands the pressures we face as college students to drink, do drugs, and party. He went through it, and isn’t condescending toward us.

- He was really funny in a number of ways, from deadpan humor to dad jokes to self-deprecation.

- Patrick was really funny, but he was personable, and cared about getting his message across to us.

We were very satisfied with Patrick’s talk. He was prepared and comfortable to begin speaking. We liked how he was approachable and willing to tailor his presentation to our needs. He was vulnerable and professional. Although most of the room knew about us, it was nice to see the support and the purpose. I would recommend him to other colleges, both in general and specifically for CRP/C's.

I thought Patrick’s talk was excellent and this has been the consensus of the feedback I have heard. We had what I would call a small crowd, around 70-80 people, and he was very gracious and supportive of our efforts to put this subject matter on display, and supportive of our turn-out for an event like this. I really enjoyed his interaction with the crowd and the overall message of redemption. Being able to see through the “dark” subject matter from a different perspective and yet not offering permission is refreshing. It’s hard to talk about the “greatest thing we discover” as the “worst thing to happen” without being condescending or preachy. It’s a talent to be able to do both and offer a solution with humor.

Patrick’s performance was great. Each person who attended had great things to say about their experience. Patrick’s story resonated with the audience, which included a variety from first-year students and general community members. We had a small dinner with Patrick & students before the set and I would recommend that to anyone bringing him to their campus. Students, particularly our students in recovery, greatly appreciated being able to just chat with him.  We will surely look to have Patrick back in the future for a larger event. Thanks so much!

We were very impressed and satisfied with his talk. it was a good balance of being relatable and funny. We weren't sure what to expect but we liked how he shared his story. We were very happy with the performance. Patrick was very forthcoming with experiences, and seemed relatable to student experience. A lot of students are going through/can relate to a lot of what he went through. Highly likely to recommend to other counselors.

The event went really well, I’ve had lots of positive feedback from attendees. We had a Substance Abuse class attend as a requirement and they really got a lot out of it. Patrick was amazing and spent an extra 45 minutes just doing Q&A. The general feedback was that he touched on some really deep topics and there were lots of “dark” moments, but that he injected just enough comedy to keep it light. I personally was surprised at how intense it was, but really appreciated Patrick’s willingness to share his experiences and struggles. I would definitely recommend it to other schools and I’m sure those in attendance
would too.

Patrick’s talk was captivating and moving. His personal story impacted the students in a positive way. Many students commented on how they related to him and that his speech made them think about their own behaviors while also making them laugh. I liked the personal aspect of the talk because there were so many twists and relatable moments when talking about family issues with alcohol and how it impacts adulthood. I will absolutely recommended this talk to other college counselors! This was excellent!
