Prior to joining the faculty at Texas, he was a research fellow in the Constitutional Law Center at Stanford Law School and an equity partner at Holland & Hart LLP. A critically acclaimed author, Steven has published three books related to peacemaking. His fourth, Habits of a Peacemaker (Fall 2024), offers ten habits for turning potentially toxic conversations into positive dialogues.

Steven also regularly appears in major popular media outlets, speaks to audiences around the world on overcoming conflict in religion and politics, and serves as a leader in the American Association of Law Schools.

He is especially adept at speaking to teenage audiences and involving them in the conversation. Don’t hesitate to reach out to see if Steven can offer an address that will work for you.
Freedom for ALL: Understanding how religious liberty law protects everyone
60 minute keynote + Q&A

In a popular address Steven has given in many countries and across North America, he explains the fundamentals of religious liberty law, its origins, the philosophies underlying it, and how it protects every single person in those countries who adopt it. He explains how it is one of the most misunderstood freedoms and that human beings often want it only for themselves but not for people of different beliefs. But in a regime of true religious liberty, everyone receives protection, no matter their beliefs or nonbeliefs. With stunning visuals, real world examples, and a healthy amount of humor, Steven can help everyone understand the fundamentals of this too-often unappreciated liberty.
Habits of a peacemaker: ten habits for turning potential toxic conversations into positive dialogues
60 minute keynote + Q&A

Based on his own experiences and research, Steven offers habits that will help anyone learn how to take potentially toxic conversations and turn them into fruitful exchanges. He also offers insights into how modern technology and foreign actors attempt to prevent us from engaging with each other in meaningful ways. In these polarized times, how we speak and how we conduct ourselves is as crucial as the rights we enjoy. This popular address helps people of any age learn to frame conversations, develop intellectual humility, engage in real learning, find the best arguments against their own positions, develop inner peace, and much, much more.
afraid to speak: the fundamentals of freedom of speech and its value to everyone
60 minute keynote + Q&A

Far too many of us have only the vaguest notion of what free speech actually is and where and how it applies. In this address, Steven breaks it down for lay audiences so they can understand their rights and responsibilities. He helps people understand the flash points and where free speech is controversial. Through real-life examples, humorous anecdotes, and helpful visuals, Steven guides audiences toward an understanding of the contours—and limits—of free speech in many places in our society, from the workplace, to academia, to the public square.
