I recently had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Dr. Laurie Mintz. I spent the first 45 minutes asking Dr. Mintz questions on female sexuality and sexual pleasure and then we spent the next hour and 15 minutes answering audience questions (via throwing a microphone box around the audience, with the assistance from UCLA’s CEC staffers). Dr. Mintz was not aware of my questions (or of course, audience questions) in advance. Despite this, she answered every single question with knowledge and comfort, putting the audience at ease with what is too often considered a taboo topic. It was clear by the way that she interacted with the audience, and with me, that Dr. Mintz has a wealth of knowledge about sexuality. While the topic of the evening was the orgasm gap—why it exists and how to close it— the questions went much beyond this. There were questions on male sexual functioning, sexual shame, trauma, consent, religion and sexuality, sexual communication, anatomy, relationship problems and many more, and Dr. Mintz was able to answer them all. In fact, the caring, empathic, clear, accurate way that Dr. Mintz answered each question posed to her resulted in the audience of over 300 students interacting with us, and one another, with a striking and unusual degree of openness for such a large crowd. Additionally, Dr. Mintz was very funny! She had the audience laughing and cheering with several of her answers. In short, the show was a huge hit and much of this was due to Dr. Mintz’s knowledge, speaking skills, humor, and comfort with the topic.

I had the honor of hosting a speaking event at UCLA which featured Dr. Laurie Mintz. During the event, she answered all questions thrown at her with ease and clarity. Students frequently snapped and applauded after Dr. Mintz spoke and a few even took notes in the audience. Dr. Mintz spoke on topics that are generally uncomfortable for young people to talk or hear about. However, she delivered her material with humor, simplicity, and energy that was palpable from the audience. She had a fantastic understanding of her audience and made them feel comfortable and welcome. She acknowledged populations of different gender identities and sexualities which was extremely important on a liberal college campus like ours. When I spoke with students after the event about their thoughts and feelings, many of them said that they felt empowered and inspired. As the host of the event that was the best possible feedback I could hear. Other students shared that they felt relief after the event, knowing that they are not alone in their struggles and discomforts with sex and relationships. These reactions are a testament not only to the high quality of the content Dr. Mintz provided but also the empathy and compassion with which she delivered that content.
